I don't regard myself as a "Personality" or a celebrity...just a guy doing a job. I work in a subjective business where making everyone happy is impossible.

I'm glad you stand by your words. Nobody is trying to discredit you, or your opinions. Your finely worded essay is impressive. You seem to feel that because what you want, or demand, isn't being implemented, we are ignoring you, and those like you. You cite falling ratings, yet week after week we are the highest rated sporting event of the weekend. twisting the numbers? extrapolating demographics? Nope. Raw numbers.

Are there things I would change sure? Of course. are we perfect? Far from it.

Defending our product is a waste of my time, and I'm tired of the battle. As broadcasters, we will never make everyone happy, I get that. To imply we produce television in a self-serving vacuum is incorrect.

Kocour Misa...as somebody that lived in Little Rock during the mid 1970s, I am well familiar with Clyde Clifford and his wonderful Beaker Street program that originally aired for many years on KAAY. Unfortunately, there is no regular stream of Beaker Street programming since the show has been "on hiatus" since February 6, 2011 after getting unceremoniously dumped by KKPT. If Clyde is able to find a new home for the program, I will definitely highlight in a new blog entry.

For other people reading this that might be interested, the Beaker Street website can be found here:

Tony,

Thank you for stopping by and asking. Right now I am trying out KeePass which will work on pretty much any operating system including many mobile ones. I don't know if I am ready to give it my full endorsement yet as I have been far too busy this last week to play with it as much as I would like. Still, I think it's a good start and certainly better than LastPass. You can find KeePass here:

KoHoSo ..

Seen your comment about "LastPass Password Manager" on the FireFox site. Can you tell me what Password Manager is the best one that only keeps your passwords on your hard drive ? Just curious, since you couldn't actually post the name of the one your using. Thanks Tony

You should see it close up...very nice, neat, and tidy...old but definitely not run down. They hang baskets of flowers from their street light poles. Off to the right as you look at this picture is Oakland Bay and the Hammersley Inlet. It has a population of about 8,400 and whether you like the old town, the forest, or the water, it doesn't look like a bad place to spend either a day or a lifetime.

Fred, when you mentioned "cracker box" it reminded me that I almost used a photo of the entrance to KFAI's studios instead of their logo in my entry. For those that wish to see it, it can be seen on their Wikipedia page. It might be very nice inside now but the back alley look still gives it a kind of "underground radio" appearance, doesn't it?

KFAI - Wikipedia

That is certainly a difference from most other commercial stations that, other than the ones with nice little buildings out by the transmitter, used to display themselves prominently in some well-known office building (unless they were really big -- usually paired with a television station -- and could have their own broadcasting complex downtown). Some might have missed this very small but significant running gag in the great old television show WKRP in Cincinnati where the station was portrayed as being stuck in the fictional, run-down Flimm Building while their competitors were all in much more prominent and nicer locations (when the exterior was shown, the fictional Flimm Building was actually the home of the Cincinnati Enquirer newspaper at the time). These days, especially with commercial outlets that have become part of some conglomerate, most stations have now hidden themselves off in the suburbs in some nondescript cookie-cutter office building (just like their programming) and I think it's almost like the Wizard of Oz where they do not wish people to ever see the man behind the curtain as to not give away how much of what goes over the air is churned out from afar by some heartless computer. Yet, in an area with as deep of a progressive history as the Twin Cities has where they certainly could have had a big, successful fundraiser to get themselves in another location, KFAI remains in their old digs in what appears to be the heart of the city -- maybe not on a street where one might have seen Mary Richards throwing her hat up into the air but still on the pulse of things.

Fred, I know that you are one that has varied musical tastes and are familiar with quite a few of the, shall we say, less traveled roads on the Information Superhighway where one can refresh one's thirst for good and unusual music. Thus, your complement about this list deeply appreciated. I am also very glad that you got me to take another look at KFAI so others could enjoy it as much as you do.

I hope your readers will enjoy this add on to the list. It's been one of my favorite local stations before Internet radio became available. KFAI has grown from a cracker box with a tiny output frequency and continues to offer a great deal of DJ/ announcer produced and non pre-formatted material. I think it does reflect what Community Radio is about.

Your comprehensive Radio Chart is very much a useful tool for radio and music aficionados, like me, who enjoy searching different music types and genres. It is easy to use and find and select, depending on what listening mood I'm in. Thanks.

Your praise is highly appreciated, my friend!

In North America overall, there are definitely other over-the-air stations that play reggae as their full-time format -- certainly in Jamaica as well as through other islands in the Caribbean. I did look for such stations but the ones I had bookmarked in my browser before beginning this project seemed to have all changed formats. When I looked for new ones on every single island out there (plus on the mainland), they either had no stream available or were of such poor audio quality that I felt they were not worth putting on my list. This is a big part of how my list unintentionally stuck with only the USA and Canada. I will certainly add such stations in the future if they are of good quality but, for this opening version of the list, only KNUQ is reggae full-time with fellow Hawai'ian station KWXX playing a mix of native and reggae tunes.

That being said, plenty of reggae can be found on the many "college/variety," "community/variety," and "pirate/variety" stations in the list. Since even the more open-minded "adult alternative" stations barely play but a few Bob Marley & the Wailers hits, reggae shows are a staple of almost every such non-commercial station in both the US and Canada as it is a greatly under-served market. The problem is that it can take a little patience to find them as such shows only last for one to four hours before another disk jockey comes in to play something completely different. While you will have to hunt and peck on your own (especially with the college stations that change their schedule every semester), one recommendation I can give to you is KISL in Avalon, California out on Catalina Island. While they do not play reggae 24/7, they do seem to have much more of it than other similar non-commercial "variety" stations. That station is in the list but here's the link for your easy reference:

http://www.kisl.org/

How ironic I would get to my computer and see you ask this question. Just a few minutes ago I was packing up my old t-shirts for my upcoming move and spending a little time reminiscing in my mind about you and your brother as I folded up my Bunny Wailer shirt from his show we all saw together at that gymnasium in Toronto. Remember that guy who talked just like Bob & Doug McKenzie that wanted to pay us five or ten bucks just for one hit off of our joint! :-D

Unbelievable! This is quite the collection of stations. I just sampled a few and think you've done a brilliant job in putting this together. This is going to come in real handy when I'm stuck in some godforesaken place with just an internet connection.

Question: is there only 1 radio station that plays reggae in North America?
